Skilled nursing is designed to assist those who require moderate-to-full assistance in order to complete normal activities of daily living, or who require daily medical care that may be too difficult to handle at home. This can include individuals who are recovering from an acute illness, hospitalization, surgery or who require rehabilitation after a stroke, fractured hip and other events that cause a decline in independence. Skilled nursing also includes hospice care for individuals in the final stages of their life, as well as care for those who are living with memory-related impairment.
A skilled nursing care team typically includes a registered nurse, a physician and an occupational or speech therapist, along with a caregiving staff. Care is provided 24/7, with staff on-site to help with all of a patient’s individual needs. This can range from daily activities, such as bathing and getting dressed, to advanced medical care, such as changing an IV or administering medication.
